Bedford peace run from Osnabrück to Münster
On 17.08.2011 before it went for about 30 runners on the ca. 60 km route to Münster, Osnabrück's Lord Mayor Boris Pistorius invited all participants, helpers and supporters of the race into the peace chambers of the town hall. After some brief speeches by the protagonists Mr. Pistorius read the message of peace written by the cities of Osnabrück and Munster. The message of peace was then to be carried on the first leg towards Münster by John McGurk and other colleagues of our association.
Message of Peace for Ground Zero / New York
Shortly after 9.30am the mayor gave the start signal for the runners and Philipp Mohs, a pupil of the Paul Moor School, Bersenbrück, who under his own steam and with the help of the runners, the first stage in a wheelchair mastered.
Also present, as always, if it is possible for him, VfL Osnabrück record player Joe Enochs and former dance champion Michael Hull and a team of runners from Stadtwerke (transport and energy supplier) Osnabrück with their boss Manfred Hülsmann. The team was also supplemented on the last stage by the team from Stadtwerke Münster
At first it seemed as if the resonance was not quite as big as last year, but we were proved wrong, as many runners joined in at the various supply points for the runners, so that the tip of the iceberg reached up to 50 participants.
As in the past year the team from Edeka Kuhlmann from Wallenhorst, who have supported our projects so often was again responsible for the optimal care at the aid stations where the many participants were well looked after. In addition, a team was out on bikes that always accompanied the runners, and could thus ensure optimum safety in all directions. Many thanks go to the police, who accompanied us to the outskirts of Osnabrück and thus once again reinforced the feeling of safety.
Nonstop from Osnabrück to Münster
The run was a great experience for all participants and many runners had set themselves the goal of completing the route non stop, which several runners achieved, under others Sven Kösters from Sportler 4 a childrens world e.V. and Bernd Buchwald, "the voice of the running scene", well renowned beyond Osnabrücks city limits. John McGurk and Mark Grace were on the road for 50 km, both runners having just recovered from injuries didn’t want to risk a further injury. As we have in September, two more marathons in Münster and Berlin on the program. The performances by Klaus Karschewski who completed 35 km and the 12-year-old Armin Grace, who ran 25 km should not go unmentioned.
If I haven’t mentioned all names, especially of all those who managed to complete the distance, we pay you all our utmost respect, as well as all other participants, who were with a great deal of fun and commitment here, but as it was not run in a competitive form we did not receive all the participants names.
Social character - peace idea
Peace Run is the name of this event which we have for the second time organized, in cooperation with the Münster Marathon committee and 1st Chairman Michael Brinkmann. It's kind of the first stage of a three-part event, consisting of the Peace Run (here is the message of peace carried from Osnabrück to Münster), the Münster-Marathon on 11.09.2011 (10th anniversary) - here is the message of peace after a minute of silence to commemorate the anniversary of the tragic events at Ground Zero in New York, to be carried by John McGurk on the marathon course, and then finally handed over on 07.11.2011 in New York as part of the marathon to the mayor Mr. Bloomberg, combined with a wreath laying from the peace cities of Osnabruck and Munster
In addition, all donations resulting from the Peace Run go towards the charity organisation SOS-Kinderdörfer (SOS Children's Villages).
